About Yeast
Dry yeast can be bought at stores like Costco in one pound bags and some large supermarkets have the same bags of dry yeast too.
I buy Fleischmann's yeast a pound at a time in a heavy plastic bag for two or three dollars. Compare this to three tablespoonful
pouches for a dollar or more at a regular grocery store! A pound of yeast has a volume of about fifty tablespoons. The yeast in the
big bag is in better condition, too. I transfer the dry yeast into a glass jar and store it in the refrigerator.
I always have lots of fresh, active yeast to bake with at a very low cost. Wet yeast is available at some bakeries and grocery stores
that have a large in-house bakery. I always used dry yeast until I discovered wet yeast. Now I use wet yeast some of the time
just for
fun and a little variety in the kitchen. I don't notice a lot of difference except the wet yeast is messier to use
and store and easy to
contaminate. The costs of wet and dry yeasts are similar.
